Professional Career

John Garnsey was first admitted as a barrister in 1973 and was first appointed Queen's Counsel in 1989. He previously practised as a solicitor with a leading firm in Sydney from 1969. He is admitted as a barrister and legal practitioner in, and has been appointed Queen's Counsel for, various states and territories of Australia.  He practises as counsel principally in the Federal Court of Australia, in the High Court of Australia and in the Supreme Courts of New South Wales and of various other states and territories of Australia. He was a founding member of Blackstone Chambers and is a door tenant of 8 New Square Chambers, leading intellectual property, media and entertainment chambers in Lincolns Inn in London. He is on the NSW Bar Associates List of affirmed arbitrators.

John Garnsey practises generally in commercial law with emphasis on corporations and securities, trade practices, trusts, equity, property and alternative dispute resolution, including arbit ration, mediation and expert neutral evaluation. He has a special interest in intellectual property and in communications, defamation and media law. He has appeared as counsel in numerous cases principally in the Federal Court of Australia, in the High Court of Australia and in the Supreme Courts of New South Wales and of various other states and territories of Australia. In the High Court he has appeared as counsel in appeals concerning, among other things, wrongful arrest, trespass, exemplary damages, patents and various other intellectual property rights. Recently he appeared as the successful senior counsel in Burge v Swarbrick (2007) 232 CLR 336 involving the overlap between copyright and designs.

John Garnsey was one of the original editors and authors of Lahore, Patents, Trade Marks and Related Rights.
