Peter Gray SC

Professional Career

Peter Gray was admitted to the Bar in 1986, and appointed Senior Counsel in 2003. He specialises in defamation and related media law, and has appeared in many prominent cases over recent years.

He also practises widely in the commercial and common law fields, including trade practices, intellectual property and professional negligence, as well as in criminal law including extensive experience in the conduct of commissions of inquiry by the NCA and the ICAC.

He is an experienced mediator, having both conducted and participated in numerous mediations since the early 1990s. He is accredited pursuant to the National Standards, is a member of LEADR and is on the panels of mediators approved by the NSW Supreme and District Courts.

Examples of Recent Cases

Dye v Commonwealth Securities Limited & Ors [2012] FCA 42. Mr Gray appeared for the successful respondents in lengthy and complex proceedings involving defamation, injurious falsehood, sexual harassment and discrimination, and trade practices claims, among others
Stolfa v Hempton [2010] NSWCA 218; (2010) NSW Titles Cases #80-136. Mr Gray appeared for the successful defendants, both at first instance and on appeal, in   proceedings concerning the construction of ss. 62 and 65A of the Strata Schemes Management Act 1996 (NSW).
R v Presland (2009). Mr Gray's client,  accused of manslaughter by gross criminal negligence in relation to the tragic sinking of a racing yacht, was acquitted by the jury.
Lewincamp v ACP Magazines Limited [2008] ACTSC 69. Mr Gray appeared for the successful plaintiff who sued the publisher of The Bulletin magazine for defamation, obtaining an ACT record damages verdict.

Publications and Presentations

Mr Gray has published and presented numerous papers and seminars. He is a co-author of the "Defamation" title in Halsbury's Laws of Australia.
